Getting caught up on spraying was the number one priority at the beginning of the week. It’s a good thing I had a good day Monday because that was the only day it was fit to spray. Winds were too high on Tuesday and Wednesday, then rain kept us out the rest of the week. I might be able to slip in a few loads tonight or Saturday, but only time will tell whether the fields dry out enough. Weeds sure do grow fast!
We continue to be stuck in a gloomy pattern. I guess it is more Canadian wildfire smoke. I know a couple weeks ago I mentioned crops seem to be growing slow. That trend has continued. I remember years when we were planted timely and had knee high corn by the 4th of June (not July), I thought this should be one of those years. Beans just aren’t growing fast either, I saw pictures of beans blooming in central Illinois, we are maybe at second or third trifoliate.
Picking up rocks eases headaches
Other than the replanted field, we finished rolling beans on Tuesday. We probably could have rolled that replanted field before or after planting, but the weekend came. Monday, we decided to wait until after the beans emerge.
I think that will work out fine as we have about 10 acres in the field where we need to pick up rocks. It will be much easier to pick up rocks before they get pounded into the ground. Our main purpose in rolling beans is harvest ease. We get a better cut to the ground and since we’re not picking up rocks with the heads, we have fewer breakdowns.
A slow start to summer
Today seems to be flat tire day. One of the girls must have run over something on the road yesterday, so that flat has prompted us to take care of some flats that have been accumulating. I guess there isn’t anything better to do right now.
Today is the first customer appreciation meal of the summer. I appreciate they are starting early and not waiting until August! Since things are slow, I think it will be a family trip for specialty hot dogs and ice cream. (Rachael also scheduled some marketplace pickups along the route!)
