Searching for the sweetest experience of the summer? Look no further than the Iowa State Fair! From Aug. 7-17, the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines is preparing to host thousands of visitors. Since 1854, the Iowa State Fair has celebrated agriculture, industry and entertainment.

With hundreds of activities available, it can be overwhelming to try and decide where to start, especially for first-time fairgoers. Here’s a guide to how to make the most of your experience at the fair:

Agricultural experiences

As home to some of the largest livestock shows in the world, there are numerous competitions to enjoy. Fair competitions involving 4-H and FFA provide experiences for Iowa youth to be involved in livestock shows, exhibits, projects and more around agriculture. These competitions are a place for fairgoers to watch and experience the enthusiasm and passion that these students have for the care and maintenance of their animals and other project areas.

These events can be found in the 4-H Building on the southwestern side of the fairgrounds and livestock barns, which can be accessed from Rock Island Avenue. Check out the schedule online at iowastatefair.org.

Food

As one of the main attractions at the Iowa State Fair, there are more than 200 food stands to try. For those looking for portable treats, there are over 60 options available that feature foods on a stick. Experience both sweet and savory options, from a classic corn dog and ice-cold pickle to deep-fried strawberry shortcake on a stick.

Afterward, head to Barksdale’s State Fair Cookies and enjoy the famous chocolate chip cookies that come in a cup or bucket and have been a staple at the fair for more than 30 years.

Kid-friendly activities

For parents looking to give their kids a fun, educational experience, Little Hands on the Farm is an interactive farm that teaches the importance of agriculture in their everyday lives. Children ages 2 to 10 can become “farmers” for a day, collecting items from a garden, dairy barn and more. At the end of the experience, they can sell the items collected at the Little Hands on the Farm farmers market. Little Hands on the Farm is located near Gate 15 on the north side of the fairgrounds.

Another fun activity for youth is Have You Herd, which focuses on 4-H and FFA livestock education. Exhibitors come from a variety of backgrounds, ages and experiences. Each exhibitor will give 30-minute live animal demonstrations about raising and showing sheep, swine, cattle and more. There also will be time during the session for curious kids to ask questions about the animals being shown. Have You Herd is located on the south side of the fairgrounds near the sheep barn.

Thrill Park/Elwell Family Park

Fairgoers seeking an exhilarating experience at the fair have plenty of attractions from which to choose. Thrill Ville, Thrill Town and Thrill Zone offer loads of fun for all types of thrill-seekers. Also make sure to look for the double Ferris wheel, a unique ride at the fair.

Parents also can take their kids to another iconic attraction at the fair: the Giant Slide. For over 50 years, the Giant Slide has provided generations of fun. With 170 feet of slide to enjoy, this is a must-see for all ages.

Live entertainment

After enjoying endless hours of free activities, the day ends with a concert from one of the featured 2025 Grandstand performers. Don’t miss out on the electric atmosphere of a Grandstand performance, with sets from artists such as Megan Moroney, Pitbull, T-Pain and Kidz Bop. Grandstand tickets are on sale at iowastatefair.org.

For first-time fairgoers looking for entertainment on a budget, check out free nightly entertainment at the Susan Knapp Amphitheater, the Anne and Bill Riley Stage, the MidAmerican Energy Stage and the Fun Forest Stage.

Best photo locations

To document an unforgettable experience, there are some popular photo spots that all fairgoers should know. To start, take a photo with the iconic Iowa State Fair mural on the southwestern corner of the fairgrounds. Also, be sure to snap a selfie with the Butter Cow, a timeless and iconic treasure of the fair, in the John Deere Agriculture Building. Lastly, take a ride on the one-of-a-kind Sky Glider to get beautiful pictures overlooking the fairgrounds.
